TANDEM Cat® Professional Education

Clinical Observation

Professionals make better decisions when they establish what the cat is doing before they change it. Clinical Observation teaches a structured way to notice behavior, posture, movement, breathing, coat, skin, claws, hygiene, sensory response, and recovery without presenting observation as diagnosis.

Observation before intervention

What is visible, what changed, and what it means for the next step

  • Orientation, hiding, approach, avoidance, defensive behavior, shutdown, and re-engagement.
  • Posture, balance, gait, weight shifting, joint protection, muscle tone, and fatigue.
  • Breathing pattern, facial tension, ear position, eye state, vocalization, and touch tolerance.
  • Coat movement, compaction, matting, skin visibility, debris, claws, and hygiene burden.
  • Response to sound, surfaces, airflow, equipment, people, and transitions.
  • Recovery after handling or procedure segments.

Observe clearly. Describe precisely. Refer appropriately.

Learners are taught to document what they see and how it affects care planning. Diagnosis, medical interpretation, prescribing, and treatment remain with the appropriate veterinarian or licensed professional.
