The Foundational Framework of Somatic Medicine™
A new language for a long-missing field. Somatic Medicine™ formalizes what TANDEM Cat® teams have pioneered: touch as medicine, somatic diagnostics as clinical yield, and the environment as therapeutic infrastructure.
For decades, feline care has been fragmented across veterinary medicine, grooming, rescue, and behavior. Each sector fulfills a role, yet none were designed to address the whole cat—body, nervous system, and lived experience—in a fully integrated, trauma-informed way.
Somatic Medicine™ names and organizes the discipline that has quietly existed in practice but never been recognized in language. This framework establishes a lexicon, practitioner roles, and a professional pathway.
The Lexicon of Somatic Medicine™
- Somatitarian™ — The primary practitioner: neither groomer nor vet; a new category centered on touch as medicine and somatic insight as diagnostic yield.
- Somacare™ — The structured clinical model: manual coat care, somatic mapping, nervous system stabilization, environmental choreography, ethical billing, and multi-handler containment. Not spa service—clinical care delivered before collapse.
- Doctor of Somatic Medicine (DSM)™ — Advanced credential: authors clinical findings, leads cohort studies, intervenes in high-complexity feline distress, and sets standards (does not prescribe or perform surgery).
- Somatitarian Technician™ — Frontline support: co-regulates cats, assists in mapping and recovery, maintains trauma-informed environments; tiered certifications create a pathway toward Somatitarian or DSM.
Why This Language Was Needed
Traditional categories failed to capture this work:
- Veterinary medicine diagnoses and prescribes, but may not intervene non-pharmacologically.
- Grooming cuts hair, but wasn’t built as clinical restoration.
- Rescue rehomes; behavior manages responses—neither stabilizes physiology.
Somatic Medicine™ bridges these gaps. It restores function, dignity, and quality of life through body-based care grounded in trauma theory and clinical precision.
Professional Pathway
- Somatitarian Technician™ — Entry role with supervised certification (Levels I–III).
- Somatitarian™ — Credentialed practitioner trained in trauma theory, feline handling, and somatic diagnostics.
- Doctor of Somatic Medicine (DSM)™ — Advanced clinicians who author findings, lead research cohorts, intervene in complex cases, and set standards.
This structure ensures scalability, rigor, and a professional workforce distinct from traditional grooming or veterinary roles.
Why This Matters
Cats deserve clinicians trained to see collapse before it happens, to restore function without drugs when possible, and to practice within trauma-informed ethics. Families deserve options beyond sedation or surrender. Practitioners deserve language, legitimacy, and a pathway.
This is the beginning of a field. Not because the work never existed, but because it was never named. Now it is. And it is not going away.

Shawn and Dan are the inventors and developers of TANDEM Cat® Care, the founders of Cats in the City, and the founders of The TANDEM Cat® Institute. This method is a safer and more relaxed experience for your cat. When the TANDEM Cat® Grooming technique is used, two or more professional groomers attend to your cat, comfortably and naturally positioning them while the lead groomer focuses on the coat. Solo grooming involves only one groomer, which is unsafe and stressful.
